Social media tails are wagging after Cardi B announced on Instagram Live that she and Offset are calling it quits again. This news follows their performance at TikTok's In The Mix concert, making me wish I was a fly on the wall backstage.
They say timing is everything, and unfortunately for Offset, Cardi B's timing is terrible for him because it coincides with Blueface's accusations of Offset's infidelity and Cardi's own cryptic comments about "dropping dead weight" last week. While addressing Blueface's claims, Cardi remained ambiguous, stating, "I don't think it's true. I don't care to find out because I been single for a minute now."
Let's be honest; their relationship has always had an air of industry-made. It generated headlines and even McDonald's deals but arguably stunted their individual careers.
Can we ever honestly spot the difference between genuine moments from calculated PR stunts in their relationship? Remember the seemingly spontaneous proposal at Power 99's Powerhouse? It turned out to be a staged surprise, as Cardi B and Offset were already married.
Then there was the perfectly timed public apology at Rolling Loud during her show, orchestrated by her team - "I'm sorry, Bruh." And who can forget the 2020 divorce filing, later dismissed by Cardi as a mere "lesson" for Offset?
This time, however, the circumstances feel slightly different. Offset went from being part of a legendary hip-hop group and being the star in the relationship to being relegated to "Cardi B's husband." He needed her assistance to sell his album and it still flopped. We all know male egos in hip-hop are fragile, and many rappers prefer partners who don't threaten their spotlight. Could Offset be over living in Cardi's shadow?
Only time will tell if this separation is a real break up or business as usual. I need the ink to be dry on divorce papers. But one thing is for sure, this drama provides ample material for Cardi B's next album.
