While some viewed last night's music drop as one big competition, I was a kid in a candy store. So many options from talented women and Ole Girl. There were some hits and some misses. But, no matter what I think, I hope y'all support your fave instead of trying to convince others to see things the way you do.
Below are my thoughts on the songs dropped by Cupcakke, Rico Nasty, Cardi B, DreamDoll, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion.
Cupcakke is a very punchline-heavy rapper and nothing changes with this track. She just keeps punching, punching, and punching. That is what makes her style stand out.
However, there is nothing about this track that makes it rise above her previously released tracks. She's had better punchlines, better beats, and this track has no shock value.
She is sticking with calling female rap boring, which is a genre she is a part of. My advice would be if you are going to single out female rap as boring, make sure you're not contributing to the boredom.
Juicy J feat. Lord Infamous and Rico Nasty - Take It
Just when I think I'm over the Juicy J sound, he drops something that pulls me right back in. But, this is not about Juicy J, it's about Rico Nasty going off and taking full advantage of this opportunity. Rico Nasty comes in with her signature flow and immediately I was nodding my head.
Bitches with the shits and that's the shit you bitches never with
She pop it up and do a split, she land it on them Benjamins
I put my faith in God before I ever trust a friend again
Man, I hope that he ain't lookin' when I do them lil' sinny-sins
We all like naked bitches, I guess it's a new syndicate
Rico Nasty is a rapper who does not get enough credit for actually having bars and not just a catchy delivery. Some rappers get away with saying nothing cause their delivery is unique. You don't have to worry about that with her.
Migos feat. Cardi B - Type Sh*t
Well, the SHIT part of the song was accurate. No false advertising here. A STAN group is so busy trying to spread rumors that Pardi is writing for Megan, when really he is over here creating bullshit, LOL. I don't know if this was a throwaway Cardi song, but...no, ma'am.
A rapper does not need multiple flows, they need ONE GOOD FLOW, and Cardi does not have it. She has propaganda shit and Rachel Dolezal shit. That is why men will rush out to say how dope she is on a track and will never speak on it again. It's like paid advertisement, LOL
The bars were OK, she took her normal shots at Nicki Minaj but my main problem is that trash flow/delivery of hers. I can't stand listening to her on most tracks. She's another Remy Ma. I know you're trying to spit rhymes, but you need to clear the spit from your throat before rapping. Another blah feature performance from Ole Girl.
DreamDoll - Tryouts
Dreamdoll understood the assignment. She took a familiar "Dreams" and "How To Rob" formula that has been done by multiple rappers and still managed to make me want to listen to her version over and over again. Sampling Foxy Brown Feat. Blackstreet's "Got Get You Home" and Positive K's "I Got A Man" really adds to that nostalgia factor and classic Hip Hop feel.
Dreamdoll taking time off to work on her flow and cadence has paid off. She is now a rapper that if you have her on your track, that may not be your's when she is done. What impresses me the most about Dreamdoll is how good she is at tone switching in songs. The way she does it so effortlessly adds textures to her raps.
I know people try to use that she sounds like Lil Kim against her. Dreamdoll doesn't sound like Lil Kim, she is reminiscent of Lil Kim. The same way that Nicki is reminiscent of Foxy Brown. People who listened to rap before 2017 get it. Most rappers are reminiscent of someone if you've been listening to rap long enough because we're all influenced by someone. I think people need to stop trying to find a reason to hate on Dreamdoll. You either like what she brings to female rap or not. I'm fck'n with it.
Polo G Feat. Nicki Minaj - For The Love Of New York
Nicki, Nicki, Nicki...
This was another unnecessary feature from Nicki Minaj. I have been saying for 2 years at least, that Nicki needs to take a page out of J Cole's book and go a few years without features.
1) Nicki doesn't know how to pick good features
2) Nicki needs to focus on developing her own sound as a solo artist again
If she does do a feature, it needs to be with one of the girls. Since she doesn't seem to like many of them, that means NO FEATURES.
"For The Love of New York" was confusing because Polo G is from Chicago and he used a Megatron-type beat. The song was doomed from the beginning and I am not a fan of Caribbean-sounding music, so right off the bat, I was turned off.
It wasn't all bad. Nicki's verse was good. I like the direction she took. Y'all know I want the girls to be more introspective, so she finally gave me what I wanted from her. However, she gave it to me on the wrong fck'n track. This was Zanies and Fools all over again. A good Nicki verse on a track that did not deserve it.
I beginning to think that Nicki chooses what features based on the artist's stats and their current buzz, not on if the track is actually good. Nicki needs to stop being a stats whore and be a creative whore. Stop wasting time on these useless features that are chipping away at her appeal. Stop posting Drake lyrics and photos. Focus 100% on her own music. Get a team of people with a good ear that can speak honestly and spark ideas. Listen to what Don Q told her in 2018.
Doja Cat - Need To Know
I was underwhelmed by this track because I was expected it to be on the level of "Streets" or "Kiss Me More." It's not a bad song, but I can't find anything special about it that really clicks with me. I will say that if this is the weakest song on the album, then "Planet Her" is going to be a great album.
She also dropped a music video for the song, which didn't help much for me. I do love the continuity I am seeing with Doja Cat. This is something the other rap girls can learn when dropping a project. There needs to be a synergy between the album, singles, and artwork.
Megan Thee Stallion - Thot Sh*t
The fans were screaming for Tina Snow to return and Megan did not disappoint with Thot Shit. Megan came with the beat, the lyrics, the shots, the quotables, and the muthafck'n video.
What I really loved about Thot Shit is to the simple-minded they will think "oh, this is another twerk/TikTok song." But, if you are paying attention this video is addressing similar shit I wrote about in "Why Boosie and Future Fear Women Like Lori Harvey." This video was about men who try to use labels to put women in our place, but like Yo-Yo said, "It's a man's world but it wouldn't be a damn thing but a woman's touch." We can be doctors, teachers, law enforcement, and still twerk. The music video perfectly delivered a message without taking itself too seriously.
Besides Megan reminding everyone that Tina Snow is that boss bitch, she also took well-deserved shots at her haters.
I remember hoes used to clap for me happily
Now I'm bossed up and them same hoes mad at me
Acting like they ridin', whole time tryna pass me
Watchin' me go through and still tryna drag me
Megan talked her shit, let her foes know she is not one to be fck'd with, and most importantly lived up to the after-Grammy hype.
ADDRESSING THE ALLEGED NICKI MINAJ DISS
Like I wrote in "Should Megan Thee Stallion Give Us The Rap Battle Nicki Minaj Has Denied Us For So Long?," I have no problem with Megan returning shots at Nick Minaj. If these two MCs have a problem with each other, that is how it should be done. They should be throwing bars, not shoes. This should play out over a beat, not between fanbases. So, those fixing their pussy lips to cry about possible shots, take your ass back to Pop where you belong.
I know some of you don't want to hear this but Nicki is not the only Queen of Rap anymore. We have our big 3. It's Nicki, Cardi🙄, and Megan. Megan has moved out of the Princess of Rap category. Oh, and female rap is not boring.
Say Sumthin, Like, Share...Thanks!
Well the 2nd day Spotify numbers are IN and Thot Shit moved UP to #15. This is great because Spotify and YouTube are Megan’s weak areas. Still no BIG playlist support! 🤦🏾♀️
Megan had the BEST drop. I’m not going to lie. I was a little disappointed when she dropped the song title and cover art because I thought the song was going to be about sex. But she proved me wrong and the song is a bop! Not to mention, it had the highest female debut on Spotify which is big because Megan isn’t on today’s top hits. And she was placed at #17 on the Rap Caviar playlist and still came out on top! I love that for her!
I'm a start by saying this, "YOUR OPINION IS YOUR OPINION" and no one should get upset with you (Yaya) for that!!!!!
Now Lets get started!!!!!
Cupcakke: I like her she has a very raw and bar heavy type of talent that you don't see in most rappers today, but her sound is starting to become repetitive to the point you really can't tell the difference between her new songs and the old songs, thats not good!!!! She needs to find a way to branch out because the Discounts record even though interesting put her in a bad spot within the industry!!!!
Rico Nasty: Did not hear the song so can't give an opinion!!! But I like her though!!!!
Cardi:…
nicki said she liked the song, so maybe it's about finding the right song for her to collab with, but what do these men's songs have for her that the women don't? i agree, her verse was good though, dreamdoll went in. i feel like megan and nicki are capable of keeping it in rap, we know how some rappers take it out of the music like cardi b, stunna girl? with rocky badass, and don't even get me started on the male rappers, but megan and nicki are both private and professional, so they'll keep it in the music, and hopefully we can get some songs like roman's revenge, doe rae me, etc and not like toy soldiers. cardi…
Forgot to add: In regards to Queen of Rap. I think Meg is still earning her stripes. Cardi is a Queen but I just can't give her that title because my rubric has writing abilities attached to it. I would give Rem that crown if she put some music out but sadly she seems to have retired. Now if you asked who is on fire in the industry I would definitely say Cardi, Meg and Doja. Which is great for female rap. Nicki is in a lane of her own, just like Lauryn Hill, Lil Kim, Queen Latifah. In my humble opinion.
