Both Kendrick Lamar and Megan Thee Stallion dedicated parts of their performances at U.K.s Glastonbury Festival to speaking out against the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
On June 24th, the Supreme Court overturned a nearly half-a-century precedent set in Roe v. Wade that guaranteed a constitutional right to an abortion in a 5-4 vote. This decision means that access to abortion will be determined state by state. For those who live in one of the "trigger law" states, the right to an abortion can end within a month.
Megan Thee Stallion, who is from a "trigger law" state of Texas, told the Glastonbury crowd, "Texas really embarrassing me right now. Y'all know that's my home state." before leading them in a thunderous chant of "My Body, My Muthafckn Choice."
You do not need to be from a "trigger law" state or a woman to care about this decision. Kendrick Lamar, a girl dad, made a powerful visual statement during his headlining performance when he ended his show with "They Judge You, They Judge Christ, Godspeed For Women's Rights" as blood spurted out of his crown made of thorns.
Hip Hop is at its best when the artists don't pretend shit is not happening politically and socially around us. So I applaud both artists for speaking out.
Say Sumthin, Tap The Heart, Share...Thanks!
They both had great performances.
