Lauryn Hill becomes the first female rapper to go diamond after her classic album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," was certified 10 x platinum by RIAA today. She joins an exclusive club that includes Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Adele’s 21, Britney Spears’ ...Baby One More Time, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP, and 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropped in 1998 on Columbia Records. The album combined Neo-soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Reggae and became the blueprint for artists like Kanye West and Drake.
The Miseducation... sold over 400K in the first week (not streams) and still holds the record for highest first weeks sales by a female rapper.
Lauryn Hill went on to set a record by being nominated for 10 Grammys and winning 5 awards that included Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Album.
