Singer/Rapper Melii announces to her fans that she needs "mainstream hits," so she will start working with writers who will get her on the charts. She tweeted, "I been pushing it, but even the artist I've looked up to started having niggas in the studio, so guess what fuck that, Ima get mine and ima get the fuck gone."
IS THE HIP HOP INDUSTRY SUPPORTING GHOSTWRITERS OVER ARTISTS?
In the past, I spoke about my suspicions as to why the Hip Hop culture supported Cardi B having ghostwriters. I believe it is another way for men to squeeze more money out of female rappers. Nicki Minaj came into the game and fck it up when she started talking about pushing her pen. That encouraged generations of other female rappers to not rely on men for rhymes. It also stopped men from being able to hold over women's heads that they made them.
Enter Cardi B to lower the bar while raising the checks and visibility of ghostwriters. These writers are out of the closet because Cardi B reduced the stigma of female rappers having pen help. I have always said that Cardi B was trying to drag female rap back to pre-Nicki Minaj. The Pre-Nicki era assumed that female rappers were spitting what was written for them, and fans were OK with it. That is what Cardi's entrance into the game was trying to reintroduce. However, it didn't entirely work because the girls after
Cardi B were still working off Nicki Minaj's "PinkPrint," which is why she is trying so hard to be viewed as a writer now.
But, with women getting verse help or given whole songs charting and collecting plaques, while the media dares to compare them to women who did the work, some are saying fuck it. Melii is not the first woman to lose faith in herself.
My thing is, if an artist wants to get some pen help past a hook or idea, then OK. But, how do they know they will chart? Charting requires more than a catchy TikTok song. There are plenty of artists with writers that are in the exact spot Melii is, in fact, probably doing worse. Why do Melii and other artists assume getting writers equal chart success? You never hear men publicly jump to that conclusion as to why they are not successful.
This is what gets my spidey senses going. Are the girls being told if they work with specific writers, then they will get the support they need to chart because the industry is supporting certain "ghostwriters," not artists?
The two artists that the media loves celebrating their stats are Drake and Cardi B. Are they being used to send a message to other artists that if you don't play the game of sharing more of your pie, you won't have a pie?
*We have to note that Melii is a singer/rapper. So, she may just mean with her song, which wouldn't be an issue besides she is known as a writer, so she wanted to be honest with fans about the change.
Interesting take on Twitter...
I hope Melii isn't just tweeting while frustrated. She may need help learning how to write a certain way, which is different than allowing others to take the pen out of her hand.
For example, people have suggested that Megan Thee Stallion work on her hooks. I agree, that Megan's hooks can be better. I was hoping she would sit with someone like Ester Dean. Hell, Ester can write the hook for all I care, LOL. But, since Megan is a writer, learning the art of a great hook, I think will put her over the top because her rhymes are there.
That may be what Melii needs is a writer's boot camp like the one Drake was apart of for Dr. Dre.
*Ghostwriter: in the past, they were writers who were left off the credits. Now, they are put on the credits and called co-writers even if they wrote the majority of the verses. It's the same thing, it's just being marketed differently to fans.
Say Sumthin, Like, Share...Thanks!
It’s not about the lyrics anymore. It’s all about likeable personalities. Name a female rapper who‘s music is currently doing well and they aren’t known for their personalities? Megan and Cardi are the biggest out because of their brands. Saweetie is getting up there as well! If rap girls want to be successful then they need to have a strong brand!
This was good, especially when the guy said being around the artist its easy to tap in their mind. Thats why Pardi is on everything Ole girl does. Even when Lil Yachty writing for City Girls, he was around and able to tap in.
Yeah Megan can tap in with Ester or Iscarlett to get hooks. Let some of the women in on this money lol. I betta not see Jordan Thorpe name on any of Meg's shit from here on out, jk but I'm fr. He doesn't do it to Ole girl, but the moment his name is on shit of Meg's and it blows he's gonna make it seem as if he's the one that made it happen.…
