The "Ice Age" of Female Rap: Billboard's Cover Story on Ice Spice

Just as the seasons change, so does the landscape of female rap. While we've all enjoyed our Hot Girl Summers, a cool breeze is blowing through the industry. Billboard's latest cover story on Bronx rapper Ice Spice has dubbed this shift the "Ice Age," hinting at a new era dawning in female rap. While I am still skeptical about all the hype surrounding Ice Spice, her industry support is eerily similar to that of fellow Bronx rapper Cardi B, so she may end up turning this moment into a Grammy. That is why fluff pieces like this by Billboard are on par, particularly for someone who currently resides in the top 10 with her Pinkpantheress collab, the "Boys A Liar" Remix, and just a week off from making her MET Gala debut.

While I found the article excessively long for a story not presenting much new information, there were 4 parts that piqued the interest of my wandering mind.

1- I noticed the article highlighted how fans call her "the People's Princess," which is similar to the narrative that Cardi B was "the People's Champ" amid her beef with Nicki Minaj. I do not know if this is just a coincidence or planned, but it did stick out to me.

2- Ice Spice's manager, James Rosemond Jr., is the son of 50 Cent's arch-enemy Jimmy Henchman, who is currently serving time on multiple charges and allegedly attempted to kill 50 Cent.

3- The article claims she signed with 10K/Capitol, keeping her masters and publishing...hmmm.

4- Going viral by doing the Erica Banks' "Buss It" Challenge inspired her to put out her own music.

That is about it when it comes to this article. The photos are good for her, but overall not that impressive. You can read the FULL ARTICLE HERE
