WHAT IS A FLOP?
A flop used to be a record that failed to sell the number of copies the label had anticipated. But now it seems like what is considered a "flop" is based on the whim of blogs and fans. There doesn't seem to be a solid criterion, except being #1. People are calling songs/albums within the top 20 flops, which is ridiculous to me. The term "Top 40 Hit" seems to be going extinct.
I want to know how do y'all determine if a song or album is a flop? Do you consider:
Sold less than the last project
How much promo/hype
How much are their peers selling
Hit single leading into next release
Overall sales history
How long they have been around
Let me know what a flop is to you!
Say Sumthin, Like, Share...Thanks!
I feel like a flop is still what you have highlighted in red, period point blank.
The only people playing around with the definition are 12 year old stans
Has anyone's thoughts change?
I think a better question would be 'can trash songs be bops, and good songs flop?' because the general public likes trash music. i remember a time when they had songs like 'bitch, you guessed it' and 'what does the fox say' bopping. no amount of streams, downloads, chart placement, will convince me a song is a bop when it's trash
Beautiful Mistakes is a prime example of a song that some would call a flop even though it's spent 13 weeks on the chart and is in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'm pretty sure this song did what it had to do from a labels perspective and to Pop fans. But, since Meg is being targeted by a group, they yelled "FLOP" the minute the song dropped, LOL.
Now, I am not a fan of the song. It sounded better than I thought it would and that is the best I can give it. But, I can't call it a FLOP.
I look at the streams. If you debut high and then fall greatly the week after then it’s a flop. If the song don’t chart then it’s a flop.
