Wale tweeted, "Has there ever been a time in music where this many songs sound the same?"
For all you "crate diggers" we know, we know...u hAvE tO sEaRcH fOr tHe mUsIc. Yes, if you're a person who likes searching, you can find tons of music that sounds different, but when people say music sounds the same, I believe they are talking about the music on the radio and songs that chart.
I hate that my nieces and nephews have to search for music while I did not. Growing up, there was so much good music from Hip Hop, R&B, and even Rock. I want us to get back to that place. Plus, we know most people are too lazy to search.
POP SMOKE COPYCATS
Wale's tweet actually is kinda related to a Pitchfork story I read last night on Warner Records artist CJ. CJ got signed after his song "Whoopty" blew up on TikTok. He is one of several rappers trying to fill the hole left after Pop Smoke was killed. But, unlike those other rappers, CJ has the backing of industry insiders. His uncle used to be an executive at Bad Boy. Some people are calling CJ another 6ix9ine.
All these drill rappers are trying to mimic Pop Smoke's sound, voice, or aesthetic.

WHEN DID BITING BECOME COOL?
If you agree with Wale, I want to know when do you think "biting" became cool? I feel like Drake made it cool. Drake has perfected the art of mimicking. Tory Lanez is another artist who tries to do what Drake does but less effectively.
Drake will mimic artists from the past, and if he wants to bite off a new sound, he will get on the song
with that artist so that he is allowed to nibble. He will also continue to jack a style after feeling he has shown enough love to an artist. Drake is so bad that he's started biting off his old shit. He recreates songs that are fan favorites.
These new artists go wrong by copying songs that are still on the charts, or they use samples in the most uncreative way ever.
I also feel the pressure to have a #1 has added to the copycat movement in music. Before, if you had a Top 40 hit, you were in there. No one would dare try to talk shit to you if you were a top 40 artist. Now people talk shit to Top 20 artists. if you do not have a #1, fans and blogs act like you ain't done shit.
So, artists just copy what is currently doing well on the charts so they can at least claim they are charting.
Thoughts?
Say Sumthin, Like, Share...Thanks!
Whoopty is a sample as well
I seen somewhere they are both brim. Its pics of them together throwing up gang signs.
@chloe,
I did not know Ole Girl passed on doing a remix to this song. I wonder if it was contract related because she is a CJ type artist to me. Everything Pitchfork said about CJ, minus TikTok, is Cardi.
Plus, this sound fits her because it has that Spanish flavor.
Everything you said is true 🤷🏽♀️ Oh and if Cj can pull off being a mix of Pop+69 he’s really going to do some numbers. Speaking of Whoopy when I first heard it I said Cardi would sound perfect on it. That’s def a missed bag that she didn’t do it, especially given how well the song is doing. I’m not a fan of her and her music but if she’s a rapper I don’t see why she didn’t do it! It just seemed to perfect especially with him asking.
